[Question] What is the future of (old-school) wrist watches?​

"My teenage son borrowed a Casio MRW200H and has been wearing it to school this week. In a class of 700, he says he's the only one wearing something other than a smart watch, and people are excited / amused / curious - not to follow his lead, but because it's like a meme to have such a relic on his wrist. Some people have joked he's a grandpa, and a special few have asked how he can read the time."

"Yet millions of old-school watches are still sold each year (I'm helping!), and the luxury automatic market seems to be doing just fine. How and when does this story end?"

Do you have any mechanical clocks? ..Do you still use them?

Only a few Westclox Scotty Pocket Watches from work years, along with a ladies Gold Accutron pocket watch on a chain, that was my choice for my 35th year working. It is my Wife's. She has 2 or 3 wrist watches also. 2 years ago, we upgraded to Seiko Solar Watches, and wear these exclusively. Yes, we have time on our hands! We also have a few kitchen timers that I fumble with occasionally. No egg timers or sun dials, to speak of

I've inherited 3 wind up clocks. One was very old even when I was a kid. It's a Gilbert No. 3005 wall clock that belonged to my grandmother in WV. We just called it "Gilbert." When we visited her, I had to sleep on the couch, and the clock was on the wall right above the couch. It was very hard to go to sleep anticipating the chime on the hours, and it would go into unevenly spaced ticks, then back to even. All 3 clocks have remained unwound for decades because I don't like chimes on the hour or even loud tick-tock-ing, and neither did my parents.

William L. Gilbert Clock Company​

William Lewis Gilbert (1807-90)

Originally known as Marsh, Gilbert and Company, it was founded by William Lewis Gilbert (1807-90) and his brother-in-law George Marsh when they purchased a clock shop servicing the Farmington and Bristol, Connecticut area. Around 1834, they moved the company to Dayton, Ohio but returned to Bristol after only a year.
